William Dean Singleton, 54, on Friday became CEO of ANG
Newspapers, which publishes this newspaper, as the group's parent
company, MediaNews Group, prepares to add the San Jose Mercury News,
Contra Costa Times and Monterey Herald to its Northern California
holdings. Singleton has been chairman of ANG for 21 years, and serves
as vice-chairman and CEO of MediaNews, headquartered in Denver. Fred
Mott, 58, publisher and CEO of ANG, is leaving the company. MediaNews
is awaiting federal review of its proposed purchase of four Knight
Ridder papers from McClatchy newspapers, and the sale is expected to
