OAKLAND -- The city is becoming friendlier for some furry
creatures, and its none too soon, Oakland dog owners say.
The City Council recently approved an exception to the no-dogs
policy in city parks to allow conversion of two dirt parking lots in
Joaquin Miller Park into fenced-off dog play areas near the
Woodminster Ampitheatre.
The plan was supported by Councilmembers Jean Quan (Montclair-
Laurel) and Henry Chang Jr. (At-Large).
Of the city's 100 parks and open spaces, Hardy Dog Park in
Rockridge, directly under Highway 24, currently is the only place
where dogs can run around without a leash inside an enclosed fence.
