CARSON CITY, Nev., has the charm of an aging temptress: a little
wrinkled and a bit bawdy, but with a heart of silver. Up close,
Nevada's capital is a friendly town, welcoming to visitors looking
for a good time indoors and outdoors.
So recently, when my wife and I -- also a little wrinkled and a
bit bawdy -- were ready for an appropriate escape from the Bay Area,
we headed east over the Sierra to Carson City. We also visited nearby
Virginia City, another town with a ribald reputation.
After stopping for lunch near the south shore of Lake Tahoe, we
drove 14 miles along Hwy. 50 into the city named for frontiersman Kit
Carson.
Carson passed through the area as a scout of John C. Fremont in ...
