CARSON CITY, Nev., has the charm of an aging temptress: a little wrinkled and a bit bawdy, but with a heart of silver. Up close, Nevada's capital is a friendly town, welcoming to visitors looking for a good time indoors and outdoors.

So recently, when my wife and I -- also a little wrinkled and a bit bawdy -- were ready for an appropriate escape from the Bay Area, we headed east over the Sierra to Carson City. We also visited nearby Virginia City, another town with a ribald reputation.

After stopping for lunch near the south shore of Lake Tahoe, we drove 14 miles along Hwy. 50 into the city named for frontiersman Kit Carson.
