Article: Castro Valley park bond may face bumpy road toward ballot

HAYWARD -- Fasten your seat belts, Bette Davis fans. It's going to be a bumpy ride getting a $30 million park bond passed in Castro Valley this fall.

Blunt and often belligerent, opponents of the land acquisition and development plan turned out Tuesday night for the normally tranquil Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD) directors' meeting.

The main objections?

Overall costs. A lack of specifics about the Nov. 7 ballot measure. Available park space that often is underused or unkempt. And, HARD's decision to assess only Castro Valley taxpayers -- and a slice of El Portal Ridge in Ashland -- for buying and developing 24 acres in west Castro Valley.
