LA HONDA -- Two weeks ago, Sue DuHamel learned of a fire that had
ruined a Walnut Creek apartment, but left 15 frightened and sick
guinea pigs behind. She feared they would be euthanized if taken to a
shelter, so she took them in.
DuHamel already had 10 guinea pigs awaiting adoption at her house,
but she set up more cages in the living room and nursed the new ones
back to health. Cages full of guinea pigs are now stacked on every
available surface except the kitchen counter -- along the couch, in
front of the television and next to the fireplace.
"This is too many, but there are some stories you cannot turn your
back on. I probably saved their lives getting them out of there,"
