Spinach became scarce this weekend as grocery stores and
restaurants pulled the leafy greens from shelves and menus and
federal health officials increased the numbers sickened by tainted
spinach Saturday to 102 people in 19 states, including one death.
Consumers were warned Saturday not to eat any fresh spinach or
products containing fresh spinach, even spinach sold loose.
Previously, health officials had warned people away from only
packaged fresh spinach. "Consumers may not be aware that the spinach
was packaged at one time," Dr. David Acheson, chief medical officer
at the Center for Food Safety at the Food and Drug Administration,
