Article: Apple to Cut Work Force By 30 Pct.; 4,100 Layoffs Aim To Bring Back Profits

In its latest gambit to become profitable again, beleaguered Apple Computer Inc. said yesterday it will lay off about 4,100 employees, or 30 percent of its work force, and scale back its product line.

The company was vague about which models of its flagship Macintosh desktop computers and Powerbook laptop computers would be discontinued. It said it would continue to produce its Newton hand-held computers for the time being.

Apple said the restructuring is intended to reduce annual operating costs by $500 million. But in the short term, it will cost money to implement the overhaul, resulting in a $155 million charge against profits in Apple's fiscal second quarter, the company said. ...
