During his 1987 Supreme Court nomination fight, the blunt,
bearded Robert Bork became larger than life. He was more than a
judge standing for the nation's highest court. He represented a
political struggle between a Republican president and a Democratic
Senate over a divided court. Liberals portrayed him as an extreme
conservative who would turn back the social gains of three decades.
When he lost, the Right cast him as a brilliant martyr cut down by
the ruthless tactics of left-wing interest groups. "Borking" became
part of the political lexicon, meaning to caricature a person's
views for partisan ends.
Bork then quit his appeals court judgeship so he could
