It looks like a portrait of Eppa Hunton may be headed back to
the county courthouse.
Only it's not the 100-year-old portrait that caused so much
local hand-wringing and angst last year when it was unceremoniously
put up for auction and sold without the consultation of historical
experts.
Rather, it's a second portrait of Hunton, a former Prince
William County commonwealth's attorney and Confederate general, that
has been lingering in courthouse storage for years. Spattered with
white spray paint and stripped of its frame and nameplate, the work
was considered unidentifiable.
Until someone thought to turn it over.
And there, penned on the back of the canvas, were the words:
