American Muslims can't afford to skirt the hard questions, says
James Toronto, associate professor of Islamic studies at Brigham
Young University.
When Time magazine carried a cover photo of a woman being stoned
to death for adultery, Toronto's Muslim friends told him, "that's not
Islam; that's not in the Koran." And yet, Toronto pointed out,
Muslims were the ones doing the stoning and they cited religion as
their reason. So the average American gets confused.
"We need American Muslims to stand up and say, 'That's their
interpretation. Here's my interpretation,' " urged Toronto. "Make
your voices heard."
