Claritin, the world's best-selling prescription antihistamine,
appears to be linked to two cases of liver failure, one severe
enough to require a liver transplant, doctors at Temple University
reported recently in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
The report raises questions about the popular drug, which
millions of Americans, including President Clinton, take to relieve
the symptoms of allergies -- runny nose, itchy eyes and scratchy
throat. Unlike many other antihistamines, Claritin does not cause
drowsiness and is taken only once a day. A pediatric formulation of
the drug, in syrup form, was approved last October.
