The Wal-Mart Superstore in Winchester, Va., is going to the
birds -- the sparrows, to be exact.
The birds have been flying around the store since it opened
last year, and yesterday their flapping prompted a visit by a state
food-safety inspector.
Officials at the state Department of Agriculture and Consumer
Services said they were responding to a complaint they received
Thursday from a shopper. The inspector found seven English sparrows
in a back storage area.
The birds present a health hazard because the store contains a
grocery area and restaurant, state officials said.
"Obviously, if they're flying around -- well, we're all aware
of what birds can do while they're flying around," ...
