Article: World population will level off at 9 billion, U.N. says

The United Nations' estimates for world population are half a billion people lower for 2050 than they were just two years ago, a result of women having fewer children and the worldwide toll of AIDS, a report says.

U.N. estimates for 2050 are down from 9.4 billion to 8.9 billion. Eventually, the world's population is expected to stabilize at 9 billion by 2300. The long-range report, done every five to seven years, marks the first time the U.N. population division has issued projections as far out as the year 2300 -- 150 years further than the agency has ventured estimates before.
