A divided Montgomery County school board canceled its plans
last night to build a new elementary school in Olney after
concluding it would be cheaper to bus students to schools in
adjacent neighborhoods where classroom space goes unused.
The Board of Education's decision came on a 5 to 3 vote. It
ignited protests from parents in the fast-growing communities of
Olney, Sandy Spring and Ashton, who have been lobbying for months to
keep their children close to home. During the next two years, nearly
380 students will be reassigned out of Sherwood High School in Sandy
Spring and the elementary schools that feed it.
"Capital dollars are simply too dear in this county" to
