The Rev. Al Sharpton, the rabble-rousing preacher known for
yelling "racism" in this crowded theater of a city, paused for a
moment as if prepping himself for an unfamiliar role. Before him, in
the low-lit grandeur of the United Nations dining room, stood
hundreds of black-tied men and cocktail-dressed women to whom he was
to be introduced as an "honored guest."
"Okay," he stage-whispered to a companion as he smoothed his
bouffant hair, straightened his ample, pinstripe suit jacket and
plunged into the crowd. "Let's pretend we do this every night."
Sharpton, 42, the boy preacher turned rock promoter turned
civil rights shock artist, is now performing here as a Democratic
mayoral ...
