Henry Allen wrote a fine appreciation of Allen Ginsberg {April
7, Style}, but I'd like to clarify one possible impression -- the
part about Ginsberg's wearing suits and ties in recent years. He
never mellowed.
Ginsberg's final public appearance in Washington was last
year. He joined Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Michael McClure, Gregory
Corso and others to read poems and reminisce about their glory days
as "rebel poets." That day at the National Portrait Gallery, he wore
a dark suit -- but the shirt and tie were scarlet and his suspenders
were bright orange.
The symposium was held on the Portrait Gallery's third floor,
the Patent Office, where Walt Whitman had worked when it was used as
