Article: Sage grouse habitat is in big trouble

All the signs are there. And, now that the proverbial "canary in a mine" is gasping for breath, sirens are sounding all over the Western United States -- Utah included.

Sage grouse are in trouble. OK, and so?

Well, if sage grouse are in trouble, it means other animals are also distressed -- mule deer, included.

Sage grouse are big chickenlike birds with a pointed tail, are mottled brown, black and white in coloring, and have a rather unusual courtship ritual, which, other than in movies, few people have ever witnessed. Males strut about to attract females and have two large frontal air sacs they inflate during this breeding display.
