All the signs are there. And, now that the proverbial "canary in a
mine" is gasping for breath, sirens are sounding all over the Western
United States -- Utah included.
Sage grouse are in trouble. OK, and so?
Well, if sage grouse are in trouble, it means other animals are
also distressed -- mule deer, included.
Sage grouse are big chickenlike birds with a pointed tail, are
mottled brown, black and white in coloring, and have a rather unusual
courtship ritual, which, other than in movies, few people have ever
witnessed. Males strut about to attract females and have two large
frontal air sacs they inflate during this breeding display.
So why all the sudden concern?
