Article: Empty block may become parking lot

A parking lot is not really what Salt Lake leaders have had in mind for one of the last entirely undeveloped blocks of downtown. But they might have to live with one, at least for a while.

They have hoped that Block 40, owned by billionaire Earl Holding's Sinclair Oil Corp., might one day be home to one of his projects that would help revive the downtown economy.

"That is a key piece of property to our downtown, and it really anchors our Main Street," City Council Chairwoman Jill Remington Love said.

But Sinclair's latest plans for the block call not for sweeping development but for a parking lot, albeit a very nice one.
