FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Greater Fort Lauderdale bills itself as a
"sun-sational" destination. And why not? With an average of 3,000
hours of sunshine each year, most days are perfect for any number of
outdoor activities. (Luckily, the most recent rash of hurricanes,
which decimated other parts of Florida, did little damage in Broward
County.)
It could also be called a "sand-sational" destination. The area
boasts of 23 miles of "sun-kissed Blue Wave" beaches, including
Hollywood, Dania, Deerfield, Fort Lauderdale and Pompano.
The Blue Wave certification program, launched in 1999 by the non-
profit Washington-based Clean Beaches Council, annually honors
