A portion of Highland Drive was expected to be closed for the next
day or two following a retaining wall collapse.
Part of a wall below Highland Drive near 4500 South collapsed
about 9 a.m. Tuesday, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Kevin
Betterton.
It appeared an irrigation system leak slowly ate away at the dirt
beneath the block wall, which eventually collapsed from the vibration
of traffic on Highland Drive, he said. The collapse occurred after a
bus passed by.
A 100-yard stretch of one lane of Highland Drive near 4500 South
was closed Tuesday following the collapse. Betterton said as long as
no more vehicles drive over that portion of the road, additional
