DON GO, Thailand -- The battle against bird flu cost Amporn

passports for his fighting roosters and required Arunee Rotaboon to
probe dozens of chickens with a cotton swab.
So far, the sacrifices, inconveniences and indignities have paid
off. After losing 12 people and tens of millions of birds to
outbreaks of deadly avian influenza last year, Thailand has not had a
confirmed case of bird flu in humans in six months. Confirmed cases
in animals have narrowed to just two of Thailand's 76 provinces,
although authorities are awaiting laboratory results from three
others.
