Article: Red, White & Blue Parfait is easy and adaptable

Here are the rules for making our new favorite Desperation summer dessert: Do not cook, throw it together in a jiffy, substitute ingredients at will, eat and enjoy!

Our newest favorite summer dessert could be called "Create Your Own Parfait" -- and it's really more method than recipe. Basically you assemble three or four layers in individual dessert dishes: Put cookie crumbs on the bottom, add fruit (or something sweet), pour on something creamy (like whipped cream), top with more fruit, and serve.

When we ran across tips for creating your own parfait in "Icebox Desserts" (Harvard Common Press), we decided to check with author Lauren Chattman to see if this really is as mindless as it sounds.
