The Weekly Standard has settled a $35 million libel suit by
health guru Deepak Chopra with an abject apology for publishing a
"false" and "misleading" cover story last summer.
In the issue out today, the conservative magazine says: "We
regret any harm that may unjustly have been done to Dr. Chopra's
reputation. . . . Upon further examination of Dr. Chopra's teachings
and writings, we now believe that the general tone of our article
was unfair to Dr. Chopra."
Sources familiar with the case said the Standard, owned by
Rupert Murdoch, decided to settle the suit after a prostitute quoted
in the story retracted her claim that Chopra had visited her three
