USA Track and Field defied an order by the sport's
international governing body today and declared Mary Slaney eligible
to compete in Friday's 1,500 meter race in the U.S. track and field
championships at Indiana University Track and Field Stadium.
USA Track and Field announced that "Mary Slaney is an eligible
athlete," despite receiving a fax this morning from the
International Amateur Athletic Federation declaring that Slaney
"cannot compete nationally or internationally" because of a
drug-related suspension. Still, Slaney said tonight, she is unsure
if she will run.
