Article: West Nile virus climbs in Utah County

OREM -- Three horses and two chickens have tested positive for West Nile virus in Utah County -- a first for the area, according to the county health officials.

Though Utah County has discovered the virus in birds in previous summers, the virus had not yet been detected in horses or humans until this point, said Dr. Joseph Miner, Utah County Health Department executive director,

The virus has also been detected in 10 mosquito pools located around the county.

"We have been expecting this," Utah County Health Department spokesman Lance Madigan said. "It's something that we prepare for the best we can, but there's no way to keep mosquitoes 100 percent out of the county."
