Article: Protecting Children's Privacy Online; Administration Wants Firms to Get Parental Consent to Gather Data

The Clinton administration will press for stricter rules on how information can be collected from children on the World Wide Web, a senior White House official said yesterday. The move comes in response to concerns that youngsters are being enticed by businesses to provide a raft of personal data.

The administration will ask Web site operators to obtain parental consent before taking children's personal information, such as their name and address, said presidential adviser Ira Magaziner, who heads an administration task force on electronic commerce. President Clinton is expected to present the task force's recommendations, which include the request for parental consent, on July 1.
