The tradition of homemade gifts began in earnest for me when I was
a child, cooking by my mother's side in our busy kitchen in Nutley,
N.J. We baked fruitcakes we knew our relatives would savor, and we
made dozens of cookies and packed them in tins for all our friends,
understanding that they would be enjoyed by their families sometime
during the holidays.
I've continued the tradition of cooking and baking and packing and
wrapping. I vary what I make from year to year based on nothing more
than a whim or a feeling that what I am choosing is right for that
time. Sometimes it's the packaging or container that causes me to
