Stents that are coated with a drug to reduce scarring and
narrowing of the blood vessel may cause rare but potentially fatal
allergic reactions in some patients, say researchers at the
Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration and the
University of Utah School of Medicine.
Their study was released recently in the Journal of the American
College of Cardiology.
Stents are the tiny, metal mesh tubes implanted during
angioplasties to keep a cardiac vessel open. Over time, the
traditional stents tended to scar so that narrowing recurred. Two
