Each night, a growing number of Americans drift off with the help
of prescription sleep aids.
According to the New York Times, some 42 million sleeping-pill
prescriptions were filled during the last year, up nearly 60 percent
from 2000. No one knows the long-term effect of prescription sleep
aids. Perhaps more troubling is that some experts believe that health-
care providers who are quick to write prescriptions for sleep aids
may be ignoring other conditions such as depression.
Obviously, a newspaper editorial isn't the best place to obtain
medical advice, but the Times report sheds light on a worrisome trend
