Article: Legislators debate merits of basic skills test for students

What was expected Wednesday to be a Capitol Hill discussion on a proposed bill to yank diploma privileges to students failing the basic skills test turned into an overall questioning of the exam.

Some members of the Education Interim Committee wondered whether students with disabilities should even have to take it. Some wondered if the test was too hard, while others questioned whether it should be used as a high school entrance exam if it indeed measures an eighth- to 10th-grade skill set.
