Decline: The number

of crimes solved and rewards paid was below average in fiscal year 2001

Crime doesn't pay, but Crime Stoppers does.

The program offers rewards of up to $1,000 for information that helps authorities solve crimes or seize illegal drugs.

Since it was started in 1981, authorities say tips to Crime Stoppers of Topeka Inc. have solved an average of 61 crimes per fiscal year. The local program has paid out an annual average of more than $9,000 in rewards.

More recently, however, those totals have been down. In the past fiscal year, which ended Oct. 1, Crime Stoppers tips solved 21 crimes and led to the payout of $5,850 in reward money.
