Rafael Palmeiro has been far from the center of attention
during the Baltimore Orioles' smooth beginning to the 1997 season.
What's new?
Last year the first baseman went about as unnoticed as you can
go during a 39-homer, 142-RBI season, as the Orioles' seemingly
endless string of controversies and center fielder Brady Anderson's
unlikely rush to 50 home runs gobbled all the attention. Palmeiro
finished sixth in the American League most valuable player
balloting, but wasn't on the AL all-star team.
He has yet to have an official all-star game at-bat, with
appearances in 1988 and 1991, and two walks.
