BURLINGTON --- The fourth time was finally the charm for Gene
Merry, who was declared the winner of Coffey County's 1st District
Commission seat Thursday evening.
The winner was determined at a rare second vote canvass at the
county courthouse. Merry, the incumbent Republican, defeated Don
Ulrich, a Republican who ran a write-in campaign, to claim his third
four-year term on Coffey County's five-member commission.
The second canvass was necessary after an unusual series of
voting, canvassing and recounting, said County Clerk Vernon Birk.
"This is one for the books," he said.
