It's time to think basil --- among the favorites in the herb
garden.
The "royal herb" by ancient Greeks, this annual member if the mint
family has a pungent flavor that some describe as a cross between
licorice and cloves.
Basil is an annual, one easily grown from seed. There are more
than two dozen types of basil --- from everyone's favorite sweet
basil to the green and purple ruffled varieties.
It is a true complement to tomatoes and pairs beautifully with
onions, garlic and olives. It stimulates the appetite and helps curb
flatulence, perhaps another reason why it works so well with garlic.
