The Topeka City Council approved an ordinance Tuesday evening establishing a procedure to fill vacancies of city council members and the mayor.

The council approved the ordinance on an 8-1 vote, with Councilman Harold Lane dissenting.

"I think it's important to get this process in writing and in place," Councilman Duane Pomeroy said prior to voting.

The proposed ordinance was drafted by the city attorney about a year ago after it was requested by Councilwoman Lisa Stubbs and former Councilwoman Lisa Hecht.
