Medical authorities said yesterday they have not determined
what caused the death of a 16-year-old student at South Lakes High
School in Reston who collapsed Thursday during a weightlifting
class.
Lamont Napper, a sophomore at the Fairfax County school,
suffered a seizure at 10 a.m. after doing arm-strengthening
exercises and fell to the gym floor unconscious, school officials
said. Two coaches and a school nurse, all trained in cardiopulmonary
resuscitation, worked at keeping the youth alive until paramedics
arrived.
Napper was taken to Columbia Reston Hospital Center at 10:30
a.m. and was pronounced dead less than 20 minutes later, a hospital
spokeswoman said.
