In a comfortable downtown apartment, Ibrahim Abu Mezer hovered
this evening near a television tuned to CNN. When he finally saw the
face of his youngest son and heard the word "terrorist," his legs
buckled and he sank to the floor, expelling a tiny moan.
The family patriarch, a retired car parts dealer, had been
hearing the impossible news all day that Gazi Ibrahim Abu Mezer, 23,
was shot by police Thursday morning in a raid on a New York
apartment full of homemade bombs. Part of him did not believe it
until the picture flashed on the screen, and then he was too
distraught to speak.
