Article: Amateur team marks return of summer baseball to city

It's a new team with a new name, a different league and ballpark. But, after a one-year absence, summer baseball is back in Topeka.

The Topeka Golden Giants is an amateur team comprised of college players, the majority of whom are from Topeka and area schools. The first game is Friday against the Salina Blue Jays at 7 p.m. at Hummer Sports Park.

The Topeka Capitals operated for 12 years, disbanding after the 2003 season. The Capitals' roster was dominated by players from some of the top Division I programs across the nation, and while the Golden Giants have Division I talent, the recruiting was based on local products.
