Traditionally the smallmouth bass fishing becomes problematic at
the reservoirs across northeastern Kansas from mid-July to mid-
August.
Then around Aug. 15 Mother Nature makes one of her enigmatic
moves, causing the fishing to miraculously and almost instantaneously
improve, and it normally remains fruitful until Oct. 15.
For instance last year on Aug. 15, Jason Heis, of Salina, caught
the state-record smallmouth bass. Then on Aug. 21, Dick and Gail
Bessey, of Lawrence, caught and released another trophy-sized
smallmouth bass.
Besides big ones, vast numbers of smallmouth can be had, as
witnessed by the 109 that the Besseys caught and released on Oct. 9,
2003.
