A lot of small decisions brought Richard D. Anderson -- a Nebraska native, U.S. Air Force Academy appointee, college football player and would-be high school teacher and coach -- to a career in law.

When the 45-year-old Anderson, an attorney for 18 years, walks out of a Shawnee County District Courtroom today, he will be Judge Anderson, a Shawnee County district judge.

Sports were an important focus in Anderson's early life. When he was 3, his father, Allen Anderson, suffered his first heart attack.
