WASHINGTON -- The federal government spent $13.4 billion in Kansas last year, an increase of $780 million from the previous year and an average of more than $5,000 for each person in the state, the Census Bureau said. California was first at $161.6 billion and Wyoming last at $2.7 billion. Kansas ranked 30th among the states with per capita federal spending of $5,106 during the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30. Nationally, the government spent an average of $5,491 per person, from a high of $8,221 in Virginia to a low of $4,156 in Utah. Kansans benefited less from federal spending than most of their Midwestern neighbors. ...
