LONDON -- The notion that drinking red wine protects the French
against heart disease has been exploded by scientists who say it is
only a matter of time before levels of the illness are the same on
both sides of the English Channel.
Heart disease rates are much lower in France than in Britain --
the death rate is about a quarter of that in Britain.
But neither red wine nor the other traditional staples of the
Gallic diet have much to do with it, say the scientists.
