BURLINGTON -- He was almost as out of place as Andrew Dice Clay at
a National Organization for Women convention.
It wasn't that Leroy Van Dyke, who performs Saturday at the
Burlington Jamboree, wasn't among his own kind the first time he
performed "Auctioneer," the novelty song that launched his career in
country music more than 40 years ago.
Van Dyke was in the Army in 1953, serving in South Korea as a
special agent in the Counter Intelligence Corps. Two years earlier,
as a senior at the University of Missouri at Columbia, Van Dyke
learned to play guitar. He coupled that skill with his lifelong love
of singing to entertain his fellow troops.
