Nutritional guidelines released last week call for Americans to increase their intake of calcium, one of the essential minerals in building strong bones. But reaching the goals may be difficult for some people to do without taking calcium supplements, experts say.

Many people still fail to meet the much lower recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) set for calcium in 1989. A report by the Institute of Medicine released with the new nutritional guidelines found, for example, that as many as 90 percent of teenage girls fall short of meeting the previous dietary requirement for calcium.
