Umpires come in all shapes. We notice the ones that appear to be
fat and flabby. Umpires come with varying degrees of outward
enthusiasm for the job. We notice the ones that appear bored and
listless.
Umpires come with different interpretations of the strike zone.
We notice that, shaking our heads, and are especially bugged by the
ones who appear to be inconsistent in calling their versions.
Yes, there's almost always something to dislike about the umpiring
we see at games and on television. More than ever because of TV
coverage, analysis and replays, we have made second guessing
officials in all sports a national pastime.
