Bowling is a game of numbers, from the score sheet to the spread sheet, and the numbers just got worse for Topeka's four existing bowling centers.

Next summer, when the new West Ridge Lanes and Family Fun Center adds 32 lanes to the city's current total of 120, it could intensify the fight for survival that exists locally, as well as nationally.

"It's not gonna be good for us, and it's not gonna to be good for anybody," said Rod Paletta, a lifelong Topeka bowler who has managed locally owned Southwest Bowl for the past 13 years. "Somebody's gonna get hurt, or everybody's gonna get hurt."
