Article: Scholar says sexual revolution was born in heartland

LAWRENCE --- As the millennium approaches, the nation's image- makers continue to present Kansas and her citizens as backward, unprogressive and just plain irrelevant in the national consciousness.

In 1985, for example, CBS-TV news commentator Andy Rooney gave Kansas a permanent black eye by suggesting the Sunflower State be sold to the highest bidder to pay off the national debt. More recently, a few natives have joined in the national chorus of derision, including a legislator who suggested changing Kansas' name to "The Past" to reflect the state's frequently perceived status as America's ultimate hinterland rather than heartland.
