More than 300 music therapists, students and health-care
professionals are in Topeka to celebrate the 50th anniversary of
music therapy as an organized profession.
The American Music Therapy Association's Midwestern region
conference, "Welcome Home: Celebrating 50 Years of Music Therapy,"
began Thursday and continues through today at the Colmery-O'Neil VA
Medical Center, which was one of the first clinical sites where
students began formal music therapy training in the 1940s and '50s.
The first professionals were called hospital musicians, not
therapists, and no one understood why music had a therapeutic effect.
