What's for dessert? Whatever the occasion, whatever variety you
choose, pie is always a popular offering.
Once known as "pye," when this favorite of American desserts
crossed the Atlantic Ocean, it adopted a new spelling and a new
meaning. Pie, as it is known today, is very much an American classic.
In Scotland, pies are filled with meat. A Frenchman unfamiliar with
the word opts for tarts. Yet in this country, pies are as American
