Pizza
Though difficult to trace, many ancient cultures have influenced
the creation of pizza. However, it was not until the 19th century
that the first tomato-based variety was served in Naples, Italy.
Pizza soon became notorious when, in 1889, it was fashioned after the
Italian flag with tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella and served as a
special patriotic specialty for Queen Margherita.
This wonderful flat bread found its way to the United States
through Italian immigrants and in 1905, the first pizzeria opened its
doors in New York City. Pizza's popularity has steadily escalated to
become one of America's favorite foods.
